Carbohydrates are very important part of a well-balanced diet. They can affect your body, mind, and blood sugar. Your body needs carbohydrate intake since it is used as fuel for all the cells. It gives energy fuel for physical activity, the nutrition needed for optimum health, and the nutrients necessary for good brain function . Carbohydrates are classified into two and these are simple (bad carbs) and complex (good carbs) but they both contain four calories per gram.


Simple carbohydrates (bad carbs) are digested very easily and so the sugar (energy) is released in bursts which can cause insulin spikes. This can cause significant fluctuations in your blood sugar, energy, as well as mood.

Examples of carbohydrates (simple) are:

• Cake
• Candy
• Honey
• Soda pop
• Fruit juice
• Corn syrup
• Table sugar
• Milk
• Biscuit
• Yoghurt
• Pasta made with white flour
• All baked goods made with white flour
• Most packaged cereals


Complex carbohydrates (good carbs) are digested over a longer period of time (good) and therefore the release of sugar (and energy) is steadier. Complex are metabolized by the body into glucose and then digested into our blood sugar, given that energy for our bodies. Eating a diet that is rich in complex carbohydrates can help you with weight loss.
